On the Theme of Trust...

This year I had to navigate the treacherous and confusing path that is college/university applications. I originally planned to apply to Sheridan and Humber for their Film production programs but ended up betting all my luck on Sheridan.

With these programs there is usually a certain assignment or portfolio you must create to get an interview and get accepted. For Drawing and Illustration there is an art portfolio, for Musical Theatre there is an audition process and for Film and TV there is a short film assignment.

Sheridan's short film theme this year was "Trust". A very, very open concept. At first I didn't know what to choose and ended up making a mind map (as you do when you don't know what to do). I landed on three concepts I could go off of;

  1. The trust of a 911 phone call: can you really trust the other person on the line?

  2. The trust of a child and their security blanket.

  3. The trust between an addict and themselves.

At the time in my film studies class we were studying film adaptations and I chose to look at Beautiful Boy, originally written by David Sheff and directed by Felix Van Groeningen. I really enjoyed the book and it got me thinking about how difficult it must have been for Nic Sheff to ever really trust himself again. That is what inspired my third idea which was the one I went with.

You can watch it here:

I find it's hard for me to be proud of the work I do in film and I can safely say that right now I am proud of what I made here.

I think it's good, and Sheridan did too. (yay!)

Thank you for reading,

KIDD

P.S. I'd like to do a Q&A for this short so if you have any questions for me about it please DM @hannahcebennett
